Cascadia Metals supplies Aluminized Steel products for a host of end-use applications. Aluminized Steel is carbon steel coated, through the hot-dip process, with an aluminium-silicon alloy. This process assures a tight metallurgical bond between the steel sheet and its aluminium coating, producing material with a unique combination of properties as compared to steel or aluminium alone.

Aluminized Steel can be made using a variety of processes, but the most effective process is hot dipping. The process of hot dipping starts by cleaning the steel, placing it in a bath of aluminium and silicone (Type 1) or aluminium only (Type 2), and then removing it, allowing the coated steel to air dry.

Type 1 and Type 2 Aluminized Steels can be used interchangeably in most applications. Cascadia Metals supplies Type 1 Aluminized Steel which contains approximately 90% aluminium and 10% silicon.

Cascadia Metals supplies Grade 5052 Aluminium to the metals marketplace. Aluminium is a silvery-white, soft, nonmagnetic, ductile metal and is the most widely used non-ferrous metal in the world.

Grade 5052 Aluminium is comprised of 97.25% aluminium, 2.5% magnesium and 0.25% chromium.  When magnesium is used as the major alloying element, the result is a moderate to high strength non-heat treatable aluminium alloy.  5052 is far stronger than the 1100 or 3000 series aluminium, yet forms with reasonable bend radii.   Weldability is very good and 5052 has good resistance to corrosion, especially in salt-water / marine atmospheres.

Annealing
Cold Rolled Steel can be partially or fully restored to its original properties through an annealing process.  Annealing consists of heating the steel to above the recrystallization temperature, soaking at that temperature and then cooling the steel. Heating of the steel during annealing facilitates the movement of iron atoms, resulting in the disappearance of dislocations as well as the formation and growth of new grains of various sizes. The three stages of annealing are recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth.

END-USE APPLICATIONS

Cold Rolled Steel coil is produced as a feedstock for metallic-coated coils such as galvanized or galvanealed steel.  Cold Rolled Steel has an improved surface finish which makes it ideal for use in furniture, appliances and other consumer goods.  Cold Rolled Steel can also be powder coated for post-paint applications.  Other applications of Cold Rolled Steel include automotive, railway components, construction and building components, storage racks, grain bins, partitions, HVAC intakes/exhausts as well as electrical goods.  Cold Rolled Steel is also frequently used in construction of bridges, highway products, transmission towers and poles, and various types of equipment.

Cascadia Metals offers Electrogalvanized Steel in a variety of sizes. Electrogalvanized (electroplated) Steel is cold-rolled carbon steel with a metallic coating composed of 99.99% zinc which is uniformly applied throughout the coil by electro-deposition. The steel sheet is fed through a series of washes and rinses then into a zinc plating bath. The coating develops as positively charged zinc ions in the solution are electrically reduced to zinc metal and deposited on the positively charged sheet steel. The result is a smooth, tight-knit zinc coating on the steel that is highly ductile. The zinc coating protects the base metal by providing a barrier to corrosive elements and also by the sacrificial nature of the coating.

Compared to galvanized steel, Electrogalvanized Steel offers similar performance with lower coating thickness and a brighter, more aesthetically appealing surface. Electrogalvanized Steel offers superior surface quality, excellent corrosion resistance, and outstanding formability and paint ability.

Cascadia Metals inventories a variety of Galvannealed Steel products. Galvannealed Steel (also known as “satin coat”) is created by two processes which, when combined, produce specialized sheets of steel. In the first process (galvanizing), the carbon steel is ran through a hot-dip galvanizing process where it emerges with a metallic coating of zinc on both sides of the strip. Immediately as the strip exits the zinc coating bath, the steel begins the second process (annealing) where the molten zinc coating is subjected to an in-line heat treatment that converts the entire coating to a zinc-iron alloy. In this final process, the iron diffuses from the steel into the coating giving it a very fine, greyish matte finish.

Cascadia Metals supplies a vast array of Galvanized Steel products. Galvanized Steel is created through the hot-dip galvanizing process whereby carbon steel coil is submerged in a bath of molten zinc. The steel coil emerges with a metallic coating of zinc on both sides of the strip. Galvanizing protects the carbon steel in two ways. First, the zinc coating provides a continuous, impervious metallic barrier that does not allow moisture to contact the steel. Without moisture, there is no corrosion. Secondly, when the base steel is exposed, such as with a cut edge or scratch, the steel is protected by the sacrificial corrosion of the zinc coating adjacent to the steel.

The metallic coating of zinc on the Galvanized Steel coil provides a visible and aesthetic feature known as “spangle”. By varying the number of particles added to the zinc bath and the rate of cooling in the hot-dip process, the spangle can be adjusted from an apparently uniform surface, where the spangle is too small to see with the naked eye, to a more visible spangled surface.

Galvanized steel is a preferred construction product that has proven performance over decades of use in a wide range of end-use applications.

Hot Rolled Steel is manufactured using a mill process which involves rolling the steel at a high temperature (above the steel’s recrystallization temperature). While the steel is above the recrystallization temperature, it can be shaped and formed easily. With Hot Rolled Steel, the starting material is usually large pieces of metal such as slabs, blooms and billets.

Cascadia Metals inventories Grade 304 Stainless Steel for use in a number of applications. Stainless Steel is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass. Stainless Steel contains sufficient chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide, which prevents further surface corrosion by blocking oxygen diffusion to the steel surface and corrosion from spreading into the metal’s internal structure. The chromium passivation layer occurs only if the proportion of chromium is high enough and oxygen is present.

The protective layer on Stainless Steel is too thin to be visible but allows the metal surface to remain lustrous and smooth. This layer is impervious to water and air, protecting the metal beneath and also quickly reforms when the surface is scratched.

The 300 series of Stainless Steels have an austenitic crystalline structure and account for over 70% of total Stainless Steel production. They contain a maximum of 0.15% carbon, a minimum of 16% chromium and sufficient nickel and/or manganese to retain the crystalline structure at all temperatures from the cryogenic region to the melting point of the alloy. Grade 304 is the most widely used of the 300 series. Also known as 18/8 for its composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, Grade 304 may be referred to as A2 Stainless or “food grade” Stainless due to its frequent use in food-related equipment and environments.

SURFACE FINISHES

2B Finish
This Stainless Steel finish is a mill finish, which is smooth (not the brushed finish commonly seen on kitchen appliances) and light grey in colour. The 304 Stainless Steel 2B finish may or may not have a protective film on one side to prevent scratching.

#4 Finish
This Stainless Steel finish is the brushed finish commonly seen on kitchen appliances and backsplashes. The 304 Stainless Steel #4 finish has a PVC film on one side to help protect against scratching during fabrication and installation.

304 Stainless Steel end-uses include food processing equipment, plumbing materials and a vast array of kitchen equipment such as sinks, counters, back splashes, appliances and more. 304 is also well suited for all types of dairy equipment including milking machines, containers, homogenizers, sterilizers, and storage and hauling tanks. Cascadia Metals offers an extensive selection of metal products. One of the more unique products offered is Weathering Steel. Weathering Steel is high-strength, low-alloy steel that under normal atmospheric conditions gives an enhanced resistance to rusting compared with that of other carbon steels.

In the presence of moisture and air, low-alloy steels have a tendency to rust, the rate of which depends on the access of oxygen, moisture and atmospheric contaminants to the metal surface. As the process progresses, the rust layer forms a barrier to the ingress of oxygen, moisture and contaminants, and the rate of rusting slows down. The rust layers formed on most ordinary structural steels are porous. This porosity leads to the rust detaching from the metal surface after a certain time, causing the corrosion cycle to commence again. Hence, the rusting process repeats over and over without a protective layer remaining on the steel at the end of each process.

With Weathering Steel, the rusting process is initiated in the same way, but the specific alloying elements in the steel produce a stable rust layer that adheres to the base metal and is much less porous. This rust ‘patina’ develops under conditions of alternate wetting and drying to produce a protective barrier that impedes further access of oxygen, moisture, and pollutants. The result is a much lower corrosion rate than would be found on other structural steels. The mechanical properties and rate of weathering are dependent upon which alloys are found in the steel, the concentration of those alloys, and how thick the steel substrate is.

OPTIONS

Using Weathering Steel in construction may present several challenges. Weathering Steel is not rustproof in itself (i.e. if water is allowed to accumulate in pockets, those areas will experience higher corrosion rates). Weathering Steel is sensitive to humid subtropical climates and environments laden with sea salt. In such environments, it is possible that the protective patina may not stabilize but instead continue to corrode. Weathering Steel’s normal surface weathering can also lead to rust stains on nearby surfaces, also known as “bleeding” or “runoff”. Staining can be prevented if the structure can be designed so that water does not drain from the steel onto concrete or other building surfaces where stains would be visible.

SMP (Silicone-Modified Polyester) paint systems are developed using a blend of polyester and silicone agents.  Silicone acts to improve the gloss retention and weather resistance of the polyester coating.  As a rule, the higher the silicone content, the better the performance of the paint.

Polyester paint systems offer a hard, scratch resistant finish and a wide range of gloss options, but are prone to chalking when exposed to UV light. These paints can be developed with good weathering properties, but generally not equal to those of SMP or PVDF coatings. Polyester paint systems typically come with a standard 5 to 10-year limited warranty depending on the paint system and manufacturer.

Cascadia Metals is proud to showcase our Woodgrain Series of pre-painted steel products.  Our Woodgrain Series is available in a variety of natural colours and patterns offering an authentic woodgrain look providing the aesthetic you need for your project’s interior or exterior applications.

Our pre-painted Woodgrain products are manufactured using an offset gravure printing process. The offset gravure printing process utilizes cylinders that have digital patterns etched into the surface. The etched cylinder rotates in an ink bath and ink collects within the etched pattern, with the excess ink being scraped from the cylinder. The inked pattern is then transferred from the etched cylinder to a rubber-covered transfer roll. From there the inked pattern transfers to the steel substrate by passing between the transfer roll and an impression roll.

The end result…pre-painted steel with the aesthetics of wood coupled with the benefits only steel can provide.
